Denture Repair: Rebase and Reline

Denture Repair Port Allen, LA

Over time, individuals who wear dentures may experience a need for denture repair. The mouth changes, and normal wear and tear can occur, which often results in a need for a rebase or a reline. Individuals who have a damaged or broken denture should consult with a general dentist to determine what the problem is. Oftentimes, dental professionals will recommend a rebase or a reline. Knowing what these types of denture repairs are and how they work can be helpful to wearers.

Rebasing and relining dentures

Below is an overview of two types of denture repairs, both of which can be very helpful in ensuring that dentures fit and work properly. Both rebasing and relining are used to address issues with the base of the denture piece. Cracks, chips, or replacement artificial teeth fall under a different denture repair category.

Denture rebasing

Over time, a denture base can become worn from everyday use, such as eating or speaking. Wear and tear are completely normal; however, a denture repair is needed in order to ensure a proper fit. A rebase is the type of denture repair that is needed when the artificial teeth of the oral appliance are still in good shape, but the actual base has worn out. A rebase is relatively simple and involves retrofitting the entire appliance. In short, the procedure replaces the base of the denture piece with brand-new acrylic. The artificial teeth are not changed or affected during a denture rebase.

Denture relining

The other main type of denture repair is known as relining. Relines are needed when the wearer's soft tissues start to shrink or resorb, which can result in a loose fit. A reline consists of adding more acrylic base to the original piece on the underside where it sits on the soft tissues. Adding additional acrylic will ensure that the dentures fit tightly and properly, which then helps the wearer to eat, speak, and smile comfortably, without the worry that they will slide around or fall out of place.

The importance of denture repair

Denture repairs are needed to ensure that the wearer can smile, speak, and, most importantly, eat without difficulties. A broken denture can make life very difficult, while also causing irritation within the mouth. Irritation can lead to oral sores, which may require medical attention. Additionally, getting a denture repair done helps ensure that further damage does not occur, which could result in a need for a complete replacement or more extensive repairs, both of which can be time-consuming and costly.
